Drill Core Table Top WIP

Description

So I'm a geologist. I think some of you know that but for those that don't this will confirm it because only a geo could think of this lol. I decided to make a drill core table top. The hardest part was finding drill core I could have (for free and legally) to build the table out of. Thankfully while exploring the property I work on I found some core cribs that had been bulldozed. As a result the core that had fallen out of the cribs and boxes could no longer be used as a record of the geology of the area because now no one could be certain where is from exactly. This meant is was now multimillion dollar road fill.
I spent 5 weeks digging through piles and piles of core to find a very specific rock I wanted to use for the table. It's a quartz porphyr (look it up kids and learn something :P). I choose it because it would create an interesting texture and pattern when split right. All the splitting was done by me on site with a rock saw and a diamond blade.
This photo only gives a rough idea of what the final project will look like. I'm going to find tamarack core boxes and stain them with a varnish. This should give the table some warmth to its colouring.
